About World Heritage Day :
Ancient monuments and buildings in the countries make them stand tall on world map. These are an asset to value for. World Heritage Day is a collective effort of the communities in the world to do the needful for these invaluable assets.
The day takes an opportunity to hoist awareness about the assortment of cultural legacy and the efforts that are required to protect and conserve them and also to think about its susceptibility.
ICOMOS (International Council for Monuments and Sites) organised a symposium in Tunisia on 18 April 1982 and it was suggested that a special day is to be celebrated all through the world in the name of "International Day for Monuments and Sites" on the same day every year.
NDIA – ICOMOS celebrated World Heritage Day: 18th April 2009 at Qutab Minar, and Red Fort, Delhi and other important cities in India. At Delhi Lt. Governor (Delhi) Secretary (Culture) Ministry of Tourism and Culture, Govt. of India, Director General Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), Additional Director General, A.S.I and other dignitaries of the city joined this celebration at Qutab. Lt. Governor (Delhi) inaugurated an Audio Guide facility in multi - language on Qutab Complex which will be available for the visitors.
Secretary (Culture) released a publicity poster published by INDIA – ICOMOS on this occasion. In the afternoon a special lecture cum workshop was arranged in collaboration with the Institute, Archaeological Survey of India, Delhi Circle of ASI and INDIA - ICOMOS in the Institute of Archaeology at Red Fort on UNESCO conventions for the preservation of heritage with special reference to Indian legislations.
On 18 April 1982, on the occasion of a symposium organized by ICOMOS Tunisia and a corresponding meeting of the Bureau in Hammamet, it was suggested that a day be established to celebrate the diversity of heritage throughout the world. From this idea, the International Day for Monuments and Sites was born. This project was approved by the Executive Committee who also provided practical suggestions to the National Committees on how to organize this day.
The UNESCO General Conference adopted the concept by passing a resolution at its 22nd session in November 1983 recommending that Member States examine the possibility of declaring 18 April each year “International Monuments and Sites Day”.
