About Bohag Bihu Festival :

Bihu or Bohag Bihu is the biggest festival of the people of Assam. It is a festival that transcends all religious and class barriers bringing people together in a free and uninhabited manner. The Assamese observe not one but three Bihus.

The first of the "Bihus" falls on "Chait Sankranthi" (mid-April). It is called Bohag Bihu or Rangoli bihu. In fact bihu is a festival to celebrate fertility. Rangoli Bihu is the most festive and joyful of all the Bihus. The Rangoli Bihu is a Spring, New Year and agriculture festival, all rolled into one.

Bohag Bihu or Bhogali Bihu is the bspring festival that falls on 14th April and marks the beginning of the first month of the Assamese calendar. Invigorated by the spirit of spring, people dance and make merry in gay abandon, transcending religious and class barriers. This is the reason that Bohag Bihu is also called Rangali Bihu (Bihu of merriment). The festivities of Bohag continue for a month, the formal ceremonies begin on the last day of Chot and extend up to a few days in the month of Bohag. The first day of Bihu is known as Goru Bihu (Cattle Bihu) when the cattle are washed and decorated with garlands. The next day, the first of Bohag is Manuh Bihu (Human Bihu) when people visit and greet each other on the New Year. The distinguishing feature of Bihu is the performance of the Bihu dance and song with the accompaniment of dhol, pepa (buffalo-horn pipe), taka (split bamboo clapper) and tal (cymbals).

Husoris – folk songs, carol style abound during bihu celebrations. The Southwestern monsoon has never missed its date with the vast plains of India for the last thousand years at least. The festivities have evolved over time. The Fat bihu of Lakhimpur area of Assam is one of the earliest surviving types. This is a fertility fest as characterized by the sometimes explicitly worded songs of ‘Mukoli’ bihu and the Jeng bihu – which is performance by and for the women – exclusively. The Bodo people of Kachar hills celebrate Baisago – the rituals being similar to Bihu.

When it's celebrates:

There is a feeling of joy around as the farmers prepare the field for the cultivation of paddy. Bohag Bihu is celebrated for 7 days. Assamese cuisines like pitha, larus and Jolpan.
