About Mother Day :

M... is for the million things she gave me,
O... means only that she's growing old,
T... is for the tears she shed to save me,
H... is for her heart of purest gold;
E... is for her eyes, with love-light shining,
R... means right, and right she'll always be.

Mother's Day is a time of commemoration and celebration for Mom. It is a time of breakfast in bed, family gatherings, and crayon scribbled "I Love You".

This song by Indian singer, Kailash Kher, is dedicated to all Mothers of the World! Beautiful Song - 'I Love You Mom'!

History

The first celebrations in honour of mothers were held in the spring in ancient Greece. They paid tribute to Rhea, the Mother of the Gods. During the 17th century, England honored mothers on "Mothering Sunday," celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent.

In the United States, Julia Ward Howe suggested the idea of Mother's Day in 1872. Howe, who wrote the words to the Battle Hymn of the Republic, saw Mother's Day as being dedicated to peace.

Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia is credited with bringing about the official observance of Mother's Day. Her campaign to establish such a holiday began as a remembrance of her mother, who died in 1905 and who had, in the late 19th century, tried to establish "Mother's Friendship Days" as a way to heal the scars of the Civil War.

Two years after her mother died, Jarvis held a ceremony in Grafton, W. Va., to honor her. She was so moved by the proceedings that she began a massive campaign to adopt a formal holiday honoring mothers. In 1910, West Virginia became the first state to recognize Mother's Day. A year later, nearly every state officially marked the day. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson officially proclaimed Mother's Day as a national holiday to be held on the second Sunday of May.

But Jarvis' accomplishment soon turned bitter for her. Enraged by the commercialisation of the holiday, she filed a lawsuit to stop a 1923 Mother's Day festival and was even arrested for disturbing the peace at a war mothers' convention where women sold white carnations -- Jarvis' symbol for mothers -- to raise money. "This is not what I intended," Jarvis said. "I wanted it to be a day of sentiment, not profit!"

When she died in 1948, at age 84, Jarvis had become a woman of great ironies. Never a mother herself, her maternal fortune dissipated by her efforts to stop the commercialisation of the holiday she had founded, Jarvis told a reporter shortly before her death that she was sorry she had ever started Mother's Day. She spoke these words in a nursing home where every Mother's Day her room had been filled with cards from all over the world.

Today, because and despite Jarvis' efforts, many celebrations of Mother's Days are held throughout the world. Although they do not all fall at the same time, such countries as Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia and Belgium also celebrate Mother's Day on the same day as the United States.

Basic Facts And Beginnings:

The second Sunday in May is observed as Mother's Day in most countries of the world. But it was not always so. Not very long ago, a festival called 'Mothering Sunday' or 'Mid-Lent Sunday' was celebrated in England on the fourth Sunday in Lent. The celebrations were surprisingly similar to the modern way of celebrating Mother's Day.

The First Mother's Day, as we know it now days, was observed on May 10, 1908, in a church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The celebrations involved a church service in honor of Mrs. Anna Reese Jarvis, mother of Anna Jarvis.

Four years later, the Mother's Day International Association was created, on December 12, 1912, to spread the concept and practice of observing Mother's Day. The very next year, in May 1913, the House of Representatives of the US government adopted a resolution requesting the President, his Cabinet, members of Congress, and all officials of the federal government to wear a white carnation on Mother's Day.

And finally, on May 8, 1914, the Congress passed a Joint Resolution designating the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day.

Mother's Day In India

The practice of celebrating the Mother is not alien to India. For thousands of years Hindus have been celebrating a ten-day festival, Durga Puja, honouring the divine mother Durga, in early October. But the more personal festival of 'Mother's Day' has also come to become a part of our culture now. What it offers is an opportunity to honor and show our appreciation for our flesh and blood mother - the one person who has stood by us through thick and thin.

Hindu scripture credits the Great Mother, Kali Ma, with the invention of writing through alphabets, pictographs and beautiful sacred images.

Buddha honoured mothers when he said, "As a mother, even at the risk of her own life, loves and protects her child, so let a man cultivate love without measure toward the whole world."

In India there is a ten-day festival known as Durga Puja, which is held in early October. The festival honors Durga, the "Divine Mother". She is the most important of all Hindu goddesses.

However, in India, Mother's Day is observed mostly in cities, where people are more in contact with cultural traditions of the rest of the world.

What You Can Do On Mother's Day !

Given below are a few tips to express your love and appreciation for your mother-

About Easter Day :

n the days of the early Christian church, only Easter Sunday was celebrated as a holy day. By the fourth century, each day of the week preceding Easter was established as holy days including Good Friday.

To most Christians, Good Friday is really a misnomer in that it was a "bad" Friday—the crucifixion day of Jesus. Some believe the term "Good" evolved from "God" or God's Friday. Others believe "good" represents the good gift of salvation brought forth by the martyrdom. Regardless, it is a holy day throughout the Christian world.

Easter is the day when Jesus Christ was crucified and the Christians offer prayers and services in the Churches. Easter is another important festival for Christians. On this day Jesus Christ rose from the dead and ascended into heaven. Easter eggs and Easter bunnies are a major attraction during Easter, the festival of rejuvenation of life and living.

The Legend Behind Easter

Originally known as 'God's Friday', the present expression is believed to have emerged in the 10th or 11th century. According to Christian legend,Jesus Christ was from Nazareth, a town in modern Israel. A well-loved and respected citizen, he was considered by many to be the Son of God.

Some high officials and Jewish priests, however, felt that he was trying to usurp their authority and mislead the people. They hatched a plot against Christ with the help of one of his 12 apostles, named Judas. On charges of misleading the people, of instigating them not to pay taxes to the emperor, and of claiming to be the messenger of God, they arrested Christ. The following day, he was produced before a council comprising priests, teachers of law and elders, and questioned about the charges against him.

Finding him guilty on all counts, they presented him before the Roman Governor, who saw no reason to condemn him. But the priests were adamant. They insisted that it was his teachings, which were responsible for all the riots in the city of Judea. At the same time, they pleaded for the release of one of their men, who had been imprisoned for the crime. The Governor appealed to them, reiterating that Christ had done no wrong. When the clergy did not agree, he handed Jesus Christ to them to do as they wished. The crowd asked for his crucifixion.

As he was led away by the soldiers, he was made to wear a crown of thorns and mockingly addressed as 'King of the Jews' by the jeering crowd. A huge wooden cross was placed on his shoulders, and he carried it to the place assigned for his crucifixion. In a show of solidarity, a group of his followers marched in a procession behind him. Two criminals were also led to the same place to be put to death with Jesus.

At the assigned place, the three men were nailed to the crosses and left to die. Before he breathed his last, Jesus asked God, his father, to forgive those who were responsible for his death, as they were unaware of the magnitude of their sin. Jesus is believed to have died at 3 o'clock in the afternoon, three hours after being nailed to the cross.

On Good Friday, a cross, symbolic of the one on which Jesus was crucified, is unveiled in many churches. It is believed that Jesus rose from his grave on the following Sunday, which is celebrated as Easter. The rituals for Good Friday begin on the preceding Thursday. A feast symbolizing the last supper of Christ is held on Thursday night. The end of this meal marks the beginning of the fast for Easter.

The Celebrations
The Celebrations in Panjim, hundreds of devout Goan Catholics gather in the Panjim Church of Mary Immaculate Conception to listen to mass and participate in the Way of the Cross. During the afternoon sermon, the priests narrate the sufferings that Jesus Christ took upon himself for the sake of humanity.

The mass is in Konkani, Goa's state language, attracts a crowd too large for the church itself, and people stand in the doorways and in the premises, dressed in formal clothes with somber countenance.

The Ceremony
After the mass, the crucifix, which until this time has been kept from view, is now uncovered before the crowd for veneration. A very somber ceremony, "the Way ofthe Cross " is a reenactment of the path Jesus took on Mount Calvary before the Crucifixion.

In Panjim, which draws the largest crowd, a large wooden cross-carried by an image of Jesus is taken from the church, down the steps, and through the streets of the town. It is carried by the clergymen while the crowd follows in two parallel lines in front of and in back of the statue, some weeping and all with very solemn faces.

Those not participating in the actual procession look on from the roadsides, both Hindus and Christians alike. Somber music played by a band accompanies the procession, which slowly winds its way through the main streets in Panjim before returning to the church. The mass and procession occur in every church in Goa, but the one in Panjim draws the largest crowd.

About Manav Ekta Divas :

Baba Gurbachan Singh Ji was a great saint who preached human brotherhood through spiritual awakening of masses. Since his assassination, people all over the world have been observing Manav Ekta Diwas on his sacrifice anniversary.

Every year April 24th is celebrated as Manav Ekta Diwas or Human Unity Day in whole Nirankari world. The day is the anniversary of the sacrifice by Baba Gurbachan Singh Ji for the entire Humanity.

As per divine words of Babaji’s Holiness, ‘Blood should flow in veins, not in drains’; Sant Nirankari Mission organizes special blood donation camps and community clean projects to observe Manav Ekta Diwas all over the world.

April 24, 2010 marked the 30th Anniversary of the sacrifice of Baba Gurbachan Singh Ji Maharaj and Chacha Partap Singh Ji. Their sacrifice towards humanity is the prime reason Manav Ekta Diwas (Human Unity Day) is observed in the Nirankari world. With the blessings of Baba Hardev Singh Ji Mahraj, the Ann Arbor/Detroit Satsang observed Manav Ekta Diwas Samagam on Sunday, April 25th at the Sant Nirankari Satsang Bawan in Westland Michigan. Devotees from all over Michigan participated in the samagam.

Many Saints including Rev Updesh Ji, Rev Ashish Ahuja ji, Rev Rajan Sachdeva Ji, Rev Sudesh Kundal Ji, spoke about the teachings of Satguru Baba Gurbachan Singh Ji. They all prayed to Baba Hardev Singh Ji Maharaj that all saints continue to follow and remember the sacrifice of our satguru and many other saints who dedicated their lives to the mission.

Dr Greg Ji and Rev Robin Moeller Ji reminded us of the live scene they saw in Delhi 30 years ago when they were studying in India and attending sangat in the presence of Satguru Baba Gurbachan Singh Ji. Rev Harbash Lal Ji, and Sister Baby Ji sang very melodious hymns on Baba Gurbachan Singh Ji’s life.

Stage was conducted by Rev. Sukhdial Singh Ji who from to time read excerpts from Baba Gurbachan Singh Ji’s vichars in My Voice. Rev. Sukhdial Singh Ji also shared a touching story of Chacha Partap Singh Ji’s dedication to seva.

Rev. Gobind Singh Ji presided on the stage. At the end of the samagam, a documentary was shown on the life of Baba Gurbachan Singh Ji. All saints especially the youth were very appreciative in viewing this documentary and seeing such valuable history of the mission. His Holiness Satguru Baba Hardev Singh Ji’s vichar was web cast from Delhi.

As per the divine words of his Holiness Baba Hardev Singh Ji Maharaj “Blood is to flow in veins and not in drains”. With this inspiration every year the Sant Nirankari Mission organizes blood drives all over the world. The Sant Nirankari Missions branch of Ann Arbor/Detroit organized a blood drive with the collaboration of the American Red Cross at the Sant Nirankari Bhavan in Westland on Sunday May 9th. Saints anxiously started to gather at the bhavan as early as 8:00 am and the blood drive was not to begin until 9:00 am. There was much enthusiasm by all saints to donate blood.

Around 47 saints signed up for the blood donation. The mix of saints donating blood spanned all age groups and many saints became donors for the very first time. Those saints who were not able to donate blood were enthusiastically providing refreshments and conducting other sewa towards the saints donating blood.

In total 26 units of blood were donated since many saints could not donate due to travel to restricted areas. The American Red Cross was very appreciative and amazed to see the discipline and enthusiasm of all saints. We all pray to Satguru Baba Hardev Singh Ji Maharaj to please bless us so that we continue to do sewa, simran, and satsang and live our lives according to the lord master.

About Good friday :

Good Friday is the day on which Jesus Christ was crucified. Jesus Christ was born to Marry in Nezareth – a small town in Israel. He was the founder of Christianity, one of the world’s largest religions. Christ is believed to be an incarnation of God and his teachings are described in the New Testament.

Good Friday, called Feria VI in Parasceve in the Roman Missal, he hagia kai megale paraskeue (the Holy and Great Friday) in the Greek Liturgy, Holy Friday in Romance Languages, Charfreitag (Sorrowful Friday) in German, is the English designation of Friday in Holy Week — that is, the Friday on which the Church keeps the anniversary of the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

Parasceve, the Latin equivalent of paraskeue, preparation (i.e. the preparation that was made on the sixth day for the Sabbath; see Mark 15:42), came by metonymy to signify the day on which the preparation was made; but while the Greeks retained this use of the word as applied to every Friday, the Latins confined its application to one Friday.

Irenaeus and Tertullian speak of Good Friday as the day of the Pasch; but later writers distinguish between the Pascha staurosimon (the passage to death), and the Pascha anastasimon (the passage to life, i.e. the Resurrection). At present the word Pasch is used exclusively in the latter sense. The two Paschs are the oldest feasts in the calendar.

From the earliest times the Christians kept every Friday as a feast day; and the obvious reasons for those usages explain why Easter is the Sunday par excellence, and why the Friday which marks the anniversary of Christ's death came to be called the Great or the Holy or the Good Friday. The origin of the term Good is not clear.

Some say it is from "God's Friday" (Gottes Freitag); others maintain that it is from the German Gute Freitag, and not specially English. Sometimes, too, the day was called Long Friday by the Anglo-Saxons; so today in Denmark.
