About World Heritage Day :

Ancient monuments and buildings in the countries make them stand tall on world map. These are an asset to value for. World Heritage Day is a collective effort of the communities in the world to do the needful for these invaluable assets.

The day takes an opportunity to hoist awareness about the assortment of cultural legacy and the efforts that are required to protect and conserve them and also to think about its susceptibility.

ICOMOS (International Council for Monuments and Sites) organised a symposium in Tunisia on 18 April 1982 and it was suggested that a special day is to be celebrated all through the world in the name of "International Day for Monuments and Sites" on the same day every year.

NDIA – ICOMOS celebrated World Heritage Day: 18th April 2009 at Qutab Minar, and Red Fort, Delhi and other important cities in India. At Delhi Lt. Governor (Delhi) Secretary (Culture) Ministry of Tourism and Culture, Govt. of India, Director General Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), Additional Director General, A.S.I and other dignitaries of the city joined this celebration at Qutab. Lt. Governor (Delhi) inaugurated an Audio Guide facility in multi - language on Qutab Complex which will be available for the visitors.

Secretary (Culture) released a publicity poster published by INDIA – ICOMOS on this occasion. In the afternoon a special lecture cum workshop was arranged in collaboration with the Institute, Archaeological Survey of India, Delhi Circle of ASI and INDIA - ICOMOS in the Institute of Archaeology at Red Fort on UNESCO conventions for the preservation of heritage with special reference to Indian legislations.

On 18 April 1982, on the occasion of a symposium organized by ICOMOS Tunisia and a corresponding meeting of the Bureau in Hammamet, it was suggested that a day be established to celebrate the diversity of heritage throughout the world. From this idea, the International Day for Monuments and Sites was born. This project was approved by the Executive Committee who also provided practical suggestions to the National Committees on how to organize this day.

The UNESCO General Conference adopted the concept by passing a resolution at its 22nd session in November 1983 recommending that Member States examine the possibility of declaring 18 April each year “International Monuments and Sites Day”.

In Hindu mythology, Shri Hanuman is regarded as the God of power, strength and knowledge. He is known as the ‘param bhakt’ of lord Rama and is the incarnation of Lord Shiva. The philosophy of epic Ramayana is incomplete without the understanding of the unfathomable devotion of Lord Hanuman for Shri Rama.  He was humble, brave and wise. He possessed all the divine virtues. He did what others could not do-crossing the ocean simply by uttering Ram-Nam, burning the city of Lanka, and bringing the sanjeevini herb and restoring Lakshmana to life again. He brought Sri Rama and Lakshmana from the nether world after killing Ahiravana.

Sri Rama Himself said to Hanuman, "I am greatly indebted to you, O mighty hero. You did marvellous, superhuman deeds. You do not want anything in return. Sugriva has his kingdom restored to him. Angada has been made the crown prince. Vibhishana has become king of Lanka. But you have not asked for anything at any time. You threw away the precious garland of pearls given to you by Sita.

 How can I repay My debt of gratitude to you? I will always remain deeply indebted to you. I give you the boon of everlasting life. All will honour and worship you like Myself. Your idol will be placed at the door of My temple and you will be worshipped and honoured first. Whenever My stories are recited or glories sung, your glory will be sung before Mine. About World Haemophilia Day :

The World Federation of Haemophilia (WFH) decided to observe April 17th as World Haemophilia Day in 1989 in honor of WFH founder Frank Schnabel, as the date was his birth anniversary.

World Haemophilia Day is celebrated all around the world to encourage people to improve life of Haemophilia patients and to raise awareness of bleeding disorders.

“Psychology for people with hemophilia, the way I see it, is meant to prepare a person to understand his own personal way of experiencing hemophilia. It helps patients to define hemophilia, to talk about it and to learn more about one’s self, including limitations and potential,” says Cassis.

Her professional focus on the bleeding disorders community happened “by chance- and by my curious nature,” she says. She was introduced to the field when she took a course in prevention psychology and collaborated with a group of students at the University of Montevideo in Uruguay who were working on a project for the Uruguay Hemophilia Association.

With proper care and treatment, including comprehensive care and factor replacement therapies, people with hemophilia can lead longer, more fulfilling lives than ever before. The global community has made significant progress in raising the standard of care for hemophilia over the past 50 years. In fact, thanks in part to therapies available today, life expectancy for hemophilia patients has increased to more than 60 years. But significant disparities still exist, as 75 percent of patients worldwide do not have access to appropriate care.

Recognizing this great inequality, Baxter has partnered once again with the World Federation of Hemophilia (WFH) to launch “The Many Faces of Bleeding Disorders – United to Achieve Treatment for All” video podcast (available at wfh.org/whd). It is the second in a series designed to educate viewers about hemophilia and other inherited bleeding disorders, and to call attention to disparities in care.

Future does not look too bright as far as haemophilia is concerned. More number of people are expected to succumb to this disease about which there is very little information and awareness. Lack of treatment can result into disability and possible death. Most of the haemophilic patients are susceptible to viral infections like hepatitis B, hepatitis C and AIDS that further complicates the case. Haemophilic patients constantly need transfusion of blood. As of now, there is no permanent cure for this disease however, with the help of timely treatment and information, situation can be managed. Introduction of new life saving drug AHF (Anti Haemophilic Factor) is proved helpful in reducing haemophilia. On April 17, healthcare communities and organizations try to raise awareness of bleeding disorders and emphasize the importance of comprehensive care in haemophilia health care delivery.

To make transportation easier and to facilitate carriage of people from one place to another at a fast pace came up with the technological advancement. The innovation marked the advent of first train on April 16, 1853 between Boribundar and Thane which ran on 34 Kilometre long route.

To commemorate the first train that started in India on April 16, 1853 between Wadi Bunder to Thane, the Railway Week is celebrated all over the Indian Railway. On this occasion, citations and cash awards were given to railway employees for their outstanding performance. This year, the Pune Division gave awards to 267 railway employees. On this occasion, Vandana Dhamangaonkar, vice-president, Women's Social Service Committee and their members, M G Dhamangaonkar, ADRM, Officers and Railway employees were also present.

The Pune Division of Central Railway celebrated the 54th Railway Week at Railway Institute on April 15. Prabhat Sahai, the Divisional Railway Manager, presided over the ceremony. In the beginning, Sahai garlanded the picture of the Goddess Saraswati and lit the lamp.

A cultural programme was also presented, stated a press release.

Thiruvananthapuram, Apr. 8 -- The 54th Railway Week celebration of the Thiruvananthapuram Division would be held here tomorrow.

Jacob Punnoose, Director General of Police, would be the chief guest, a release said here today.

Titus P Kozhy, Divisional Railway Manager, would preside over the function.

About Baisakhi Festival :

Baisakhi is a seasonal festival with a special accent. It is celebrated all over the State on the first of Baisakh. This is the time when harvest is gathered in and the farmer exults in the fulfillment of his year's hard work.

He joins the merry-making with full gusto and does not mind walking for miles to be able to do so. Since this fair is also an expression of prosperity, singing and dancing constitute its most enchanting features. The Punjab's famous Bhangra and Giddha are inextricably linked with this festival.

Date of Baisakhi

Baisakhi Festival falls on the first day of Vaisakh month (April-May) according to Nanakshahi or Sikh Calendar. For this reason, Baisakhi is also popularly known as Vaisakhi. According to English calendar, the date of Baisakhi corresponds to April 13 every year and April 14 once in every 36 years. This difference in Baisakhi dates is due to the fact that day of Baisakhi is reckoned according to solar calendar and not the lunar calendar. The auspicious date of Baisakhi is celebrated all over India under different names and different set of rituals and celebrations. Baisakhi date coincides with 'Rongali Bihu' in Assam, 'Naba Barsha' in Bengal, Puthandu in Tamil Nadu and 'Pooram Vishu' in Kerala.

Celebrations by Farmers

For the large farming community of Punjab and Haryana, Baisakhi marks a New Year’s time as it is time to harvest rabi crop. On Baisakhi, farmers thank god for the bountiful crop and pray for good times ahead. People buy new clothes and make merry by singing, dancing and enjoying the best of festive food.

Cries of "Jatta aai Baisakhi", rent the skies as gaily men and women break into the bhangra and gidda dance to express their joy. Everyday farming scenes of sowing, harvesting, winnowing and gathering of crops are expressed through zestful movements of the body to the accompaniment of ballads and dhol music.

In several villages of Punjab Baisakhi Fairs are organized where besides other recreational activities, wrestling bouts are also held.

This tough agricultural operation is rendered into a lighter occupation by merry community festivities such as the Bhangra dance by men, who pound the ground with vigorous steps accompanied by singing. Women, too, break into a revelry of dances, principally the Gidda dance, executed with fervour and rhythmic exactitude. On these occasions, men and women adorn themselves with gay-coloured clothes and traditional jewellery. Generally, the sites of these festivities are on the banks of the rivers which have their sacred import with myths and legends woven around their origin and names.

The Jain community celebrates the birth anniversary of the 24th and the last Tirthankara, Vardhman Mahavir, the founder of Jainism as Mahavir Jayanti every year.

The birth anniversary of the 24th and the last Tirthankara of the Jains, Vardhman Mahavir, the founder of Jainism, is celebrated by the Jain community in March. Born a prince in 599 BC, Mahavir renounced worldly life at the age of 30 and undertook austere penance until he achieved realisation.

Even as a boy, Mahavira came to be associated with many episodes of absolute fearlessness which earned him the name `Mahavira'. He grew up as a prince, excelling in physical prowess as well as intellectual acumen. However, he renounced the pleasures and luxuries of the place, as also the power and prestige of kingship, and undertook a life of intense penance for more than twelve years. He calmly bore not only the rigors of nature but the torments from the ignorant and mischievous among his own countrymen also. He finally became self-illumined. But not content with his own personal salvation, he chose to become a great human redeemer.

He looked around and found the society corrupted by the distortions of the true concept of Dharma. Violence in the form of animal sacrifice had overshadowed the true spirit of yajna and yaga. Spiritual values had been supplanted by superstitions and lifeless rituals and dogmas. Propitiating various Gods and Goddesses was considered as a means of acquiring religious merit - Punya - to the exclusion of the true spiritual significance of these Vedic practices. Mahavira, with his penetrating insight born out of self-realization, struck mercilessly at these perversions. He simplified the religious procedures and concentrated on righteous conduct.

Mahavira's injunctions for the monks and nuns were however very exacting. Abstinence from every kind of physical comfort and material possession and absolute dedication to the highest ethical and spiritual discipline were enforced. Even to this day, 2500 years after the passing away of that great master, this pure and upright tradition of the monks has been maintained. Thousands of white clad Sanyasins and Sanyasinis and also nude monks move on foot from village to village and town to town, throughout the length and breadth of the country, carrying Mahavira's gospel of peace, non-injury and brotherhood among people.

Mahavira left his mortal coils at the age of 71 on the Deepavali day. But the lamp of peace which he lit continues to glow through the myriad lights of that Festival of Lights.

Mahavir Jayanti is the biggest Jain festival celebrated in India to commemorate the birth anniversary of Lord Mahavira. Mahavira is believed to be the son of Siddhartha and Trisala. His birth year however is a matter of controversy between the two sects of Jainism. Digambaras believe it to be 615 BC while Swetambaras believe that Mahavira was born in 599 BC. According to the legend, He was conceived by a Brahmin called Rishabhdeva's wife, Devananda, which was transferred as an embryo to the womb of Trisala by Gods. The expectant mother was believed to have seen 14 auspicious dreams (according to Swetambara sect) or 16 dreams (according to Digambara sect). Astrologers interpreted them to predict that the child would be either a mighty emperor or the 24th Tirthankar. Queen Trishala is believed to have felt no pain associated with childbirth.

While the entire world will celebrate Mahavira Jayanthi (Janmakalyanak) on 16 April 2011 with all the gatherings, processions, meetings and functions, the Jains of Bangalore might not be able to do that and might be restricted to having their celebrations only with in the four walls of the temple or their houses. This is because of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagar Palike (BBMP) elections that is scheduled to be held on the same day. The election conducting body in Karnataka the Election Commision of Karnataka and the BBMP have not taken Mahavir Jayanthi into consideration while declaring the dates for the elections. By this the Jains of Bangalore will be denied their right to vote under Indian constitution as they will be involved in religious celebrations.
