About Mother Day :

M... is for the million things she gave me,
O... means only that she's growing old,
T... is for the tears she shed to save me,
H... is for her heart of purest gold;
E... is for her eyes, with love-light shining,
R... means right, and right she'll always be.

Mother's Day is a time of commemoration and celebration for Mom. It is a time of breakfast in bed, family gatherings, and crayon scribbled "I Love You".

This song by Indian singer, Kailash Kher, is dedicated to all Mothers of the World! Beautiful Song - 'I Love You Mom'!

History

The first celebrations in honour of mothers were held in the spring in ancient Greece. They paid tribute to Rhea, the Mother of the Gods. During the 17th century, England honored mothers on "Mothering Sunday," celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent.

In the United States, Julia Ward Howe suggested the idea of Mother's Day in 1872. Howe, who wrote the words to the Battle Hymn of the Republic, saw Mother's Day as being dedicated to peace.

Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia is credited with bringing about the official observance of Mother's Day. Her campaign to establish such a holiday began as a remembrance of her mother, who died in 1905 and who had, in the late 19th century, tried to establish "Mother's Friendship Days" as a way to heal the scars of the Civil War.

Two years after her mother died, Jarvis held a ceremony in Grafton, W. Va., to honor her. She was so moved by the proceedings that she began a massive campaign to adopt a formal holiday honoring mothers. In 1910, West Virginia became the first state to recognize Mother's Day. A year later, nearly every state officially marked the day. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson officially proclaimed Mother's Day as a national holiday to be held on the second Sunday of May.

But Jarvis' accomplishment soon turned bitter for her. Enraged by the commercialisation of the holiday, she filed a lawsuit to stop a 1923 Mother's Day festival and was even arrested for disturbing the peace at a war mothers' convention where women sold white carnations -- Jarvis' symbol for mothers -- to raise money. "This is not what I intended," Jarvis said. "I wanted it to be a day of sentiment, not profit!"

When she died in 1948, at age 84, Jarvis had become a woman of great ironies. Never a mother herself, her maternal fortune dissipated by her efforts to stop the commercialisation of the holiday she had founded, Jarvis told a reporter shortly before her death that she was sorry she had ever started Mother's Day. She spoke these words in a nursing home where every Mother's Day her room had been filled with cards from all over the world.

Today, because and despite Jarvis' efforts, many celebrations of Mother's Days are held throughout the world. Although they do not all fall at the same time, such countries as Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia and Belgium also celebrate Mother's Day on the same day as the United States.

Basic Facts And Beginnings:

The second Sunday in May is observed as Mother's Day in most countries of the world. But it was not always so. Not very long ago, a festival called 'Mothering Sunday' or 'Mid-Lent Sunday' was celebrated in England on the fourth Sunday in Lent. The celebrations were surprisingly similar to the modern way of celebrating Mother's Day.

The First Mother's Day, as we know it now days, was observed on May 10, 1908, in a church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The celebrations involved a church service in honor of Mrs. Anna Reese Jarvis, mother of Anna Jarvis.

Four years later, the Mother's Day International Association was created, on December 12, 1912, to spread the concept and practice of observing Mother's Day. The very next year, in May 1913, the House of Representatives of the US government adopted a resolution requesting the President, his Cabinet, members of Congress, and all officials of the federal government to wear a white carnation on Mother's Day.

And finally, on May 8, 1914, the Congress passed a Joint Resolution designating the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day.

Mother's Day In India

The practice of celebrating the Mother is not alien to India. For thousands of years Hindus have been celebrating a ten-day festival, Durga Puja, honouring the divine mother Durga, in early October. But the more personal festival of 'Mother's Day' has also come to become a part of our culture now. What it offers is an opportunity to honor and show our appreciation for our flesh and blood mother - the one person who has stood by us through thick and thin.

Hindu scripture credits the Great Mother, Kali Ma, with the invention of writing through alphabets, pictographs and beautiful sacred images.

Buddha honoured mothers when he said, "As a mother, even at the risk of her own life, loves and protects her child, so let a man cultivate love without measure toward the whole world."

In India there is a ten-day festival known as Durga Puja, which is held in early October. The festival honors Durga, the "Divine Mother". She is the most important of all Hindu goddesses.

However, in India, Mother's Day is observed mostly in cities, where people are more in contact with cultural traditions of the rest of the world.

Earth Day is a day to make people learn about and protecting this biodiversity and the ways to care of the planet.

In India, the Green Generation Campaign started on Earth Day in 2009 and continuing in 2010 too insists on global day of action and civic participation, to make a carbon-free future based on renewable energy that will end the dependency on fossil fuels, an individual’s commitment to responsible, sustainable consumption and creation of a new green economy that lifts people out of poverty by creating millions of quality green jobs and transforms the global education system into a green one.

The first Earth Day was organized in 1970 with an aim to promote the thoughts of ecology, egg on reverence for existence on earth, and highlighting growing concern over pollution of the soil, air, and water. Earth Day is observed in nearly 140 nations. The day is celebrated by outdoor feats, exhibits, street fairs, skits and television programs that are centered on environmental issues.

The First Earth Day
The Earth Day was founded by a Senator Gaylord Nelson of the United States. It was first celebrated on 22nd day of April 1970 in the United States. The celebrations were joined by around 20 million people from all through the United States.

Celebrations are observed for the efforts to shield flora and fauna and to make world dirt free. Though Earth Day is celebrated on April 22nd each year still some countries like US celebrate it a month earlier on the vernal equinox. Earth Day in coming 2010 would celebrate its 40th Anniversary. It reminds us of our duty towards other living beings on earth and to prosper as interdependent system.

United Nations (UN) Secretary-General U Thant made Earth Day an international celebration on March 21, 1971. The United Nations observes Earth Day on the day of the vernal equinox (March 20th or 21st) each year, with the ringing of the UN Peace Bell at the very moment of the equinox.

About World Haemophilia Day :

The World Federation of Haemophilia (WFH) decided to observe April 17th as World Haemophilia Day in 1989 in honor of WFH founder Frank Schnabel, as the date was his birth anniversary.

World Haemophilia Day is celebrated all around the world to encourage people to improve life of Haemophilia patients and to raise awareness of bleeding disorders.

“Psychology for people with hemophilia, the way I see it, is meant to prepare a person to understand his own personal way of experiencing hemophilia. It helps patients to define hemophilia, to talk about it and to learn more about one’s self, including limitations and potential,” says Cassis.

Her professional focus on the bleeding disorders community happened “by chance- and by my curious nature,” she says. She was introduced to the field when she took a course in prevention psychology and collaborated with a group of students at the University of Montevideo in Uruguay who were working on a project for the Uruguay Hemophilia Association.

With proper care and treatment, including comprehensive care and factor replacement therapies, people with hemophilia can lead longer, more fulfilling lives than ever before. The global community has made significant progress in raising the standard of care for hemophilia over the past 50 years. In fact, thanks in part to therapies available today, life expectancy for hemophilia patients has increased to more than 60 years. But significant disparities still exist, as 75 percent of patients worldwide do not have access to appropriate care.

Recognizing this great inequality, Baxter has partnered once again with the World Federation of Hemophilia (WFH) to launch “The Many Faces of Bleeding Disorders – United to Achieve Treatment for All” video podcast (available at wfh.org/whd). It is the second in a series designed to educate viewers about hemophilia and other inherited bleeding disorders, and to call attention to disparities in care.

Future does not look too bright as far as haemophilia is concerned. More number of people are expected to succumb to this disease about which there is very little information and awareness. Lack of treatment can result into disability and possible death. Most of the haemophilic patients are susceptible to viral infections like hepatitis B, hepatitis C and AIDS that further complicates the case. Haemophilic patients constantly need transfusion of blood. As of now, there is no permanent cure for this disease however, with the help of timely treatment and information, situation can be managed. Introduction of new life saving drug AHF (Anti Haemophilic Factor) is proved helpful in reducing haemophilia. On April 17, healthcare communities and organizations try to raise awareness of bleeding disorders and emphasize the importance of comprehensive care in haemophilia health care delivery.
