About Saint surdas Jayanti :
Surdas Jayanti

Surdas Jayanti commemorates the birthday of saint Surdas who is believed to be blind. There is difference of opinion among laureates and literatures about his birth year. An Indian postal department released a postage stamp on the great poet which indicates that Surdas was born in 1479 A D and his soul departed in 1586. In 2010, the date of Surdas Jayanti is May 18. This year we will observe his 475th anniversary.

The poet attributes his contributions to Vatsalya Ras. He was a devoted saint who followed Krishna and used to sing songs that are spiced up the childhood adventures of Lord Krishna. Surdas composed bhajans (religious verses) in simple ‘Braj’ language.

These bhajans explains philosophical teachings and moral lessons by short episodes from the life of Krishna. His important literary works include the collection of his poetry as Sursagar, Sur-Saravali and Sahitya-Lahiri. The literary works by him helped in spreading the Bhakti movement in North India.

Some historians tell an interesting legend about him that once Surdas saw Lord Krishna in a dream and Krishna asked him to go to Vrindavan. Here he found Guru Vallabhacharya, an ardent devotee of Lord Krishna. Surdas gained knowledge of Hindu scriptures from him and since then Surdas dedicated his entire life to Krishna.

He remained bachelor all through his life. He began to sing devotional songs dedicated to Lord Krishna in Vrindavan. His fame soon reached Mughal courts and made Mughal emperor Akbar his patron.

These days Bhajan Mandali with its full orchestra team that consist mainly blind artistes stage bhakthi gyan sudha, which filled the air with reverberating devotional ecstasy.

Legend has it that Surdas had the darshan of Lord Krishna in a dream and Krishna asked him to go to Vrindavan. Here he found an able Guru in Shri Vallabhacharya, who was an ardent devotee of Lord Krishna. After gaining knowledge of Hindu scriptures, Surdas began to sing devotional songs dedicated to Lord Krishna in Vrindavan. His fame soon reached

Mughal courts and Mughal emperor Akbar became his patron.
Apart from the monumental literary work, Sur Sagar, Surdas is also noted for other literary works like Sur-Saravali and Sahitya-Lahiri.

About Mother's day :

M... is for the million things she gave me,
O... means only that she's growing old,
T... is for the tears she shed to save me,
H... is for her heart of purest gold;
E... is for her eyes, with love-light shining,
R... means right, and right she'll always be.

Mother's Day is a time of commemoration and celebration for Mom. It is a time of breakfast in bed, family gatherings, and crayon scribbled "I Love You".

Mother's Day is celebrated to honor all mothers and express gratitude for the hardships they bear in bringing up a child. Most countries including US, Australia, Canada and India celebrate Mothers Day on the second Sunday of May.

Mothers Day came into being due to the efforts made by Ms Julia Ward Howe and Ms Anna Jarvis. The Resolution for having a dedicated Mother's Day was signed by US President Woodrow Wilson on May 8, 1914. Since then people across the world have been celebrating Mothers Day with joy and devotion.

At first, people observed Mother's Day by attending church, writing letters to their mothers, and eventually, by sending cards, presents, and flowers. With the increasing gift-giving activity associated with Mother's Day, Anna Jarvis became enraged. She believed that the day's sentiment was being sacrificed at the expense of greed and profit.

In 1923 she filed a lawsuit to stop a Mother's Day festival, and was even arrested for disturbing the peace at a convention selling carnations for a war mother's group. Before her death in 1948, Jarvis is said to have confessed that she regretted ever starting the mother's day tradition.

Despite Jarvis's misgivings, Mother's Day has flourished in the United States. In fact, the second Sunday of May has become the most popular day of the year to dine out, and telephone lines record their highest traffic, as sons and daughters everywhere take advantage of this day to honor and to express appreciation of their mothers.

Contrary to popular belief, Mother's Day was not conceived and fine-tuned in the boardroom of Hallmark. The earliest tributes to mothers date back to the annual spring festival the Greeks dedicated to Rhea, the mother of many deities, and to the offerings ancient Romans made to their Great Mother of Gods, Cybele. Christians celebrated this festival on the fourth Sunday in Lent in honor of Mary, mother of Christ. In England this holiday was expanded to include all mothers and was called Mothering Sunday.

In the United States, Mother's Day started nearly 150 years ago, when Anna Jarvis, an Appalachian homemaker, organized a day to raise awareness of poor health conditions in her community, a cause she believed would be best advocated by mothers. She called it "Mother's Work Day."

Fifteen years later, Julia Ward Howe, a Boston poet, pacifist, suffragist, and author of the lyrics to the "Battle Hymn of the Republic," organized a day encouraging mothers to rally for peace, since she believed they bore the loss of human life more harshly than anyone else.

and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness,
and cause peace to return to our hearts.

About Parsuram Jyanti :

Devam naumi ramapathim ranapatum baswath kireedanchitham,
Kodandam sasaram karena dadhtatham vamena chanyena cha,
Aartha thrana patum kutaramasatham kandacchidam bhasuram,
Smasru prasphurithananam surathanum ramam sada saswatham.

Jamadagni and their Kama Dhenu cow were killed by a kshatriya king, Kartavirya Sahashrarjun. Thus Parshuram vowed to kill all the kshatriyas on this earth and made it free from the autocracy of the kshatriyas.

All the kshatriyas fled away due to the terror of him and no one remained to protect this earth. So Kashyap muni ordered Parshuram to leave this world. Parshuram went to mountain Mahendra and began living there.

The birthday of Parshuram is celebrated on the 3rd day of Shukla Paksh of Vaishakh month. This year in 2010 the date of Parshuram Jayanti is May 16. Fast is kept on this day to be blessed with son and is also called Parshu Rama Dwadashi.

According to Varah Puran by keeping a fast on this day the devotee enjoys his stay in Brahmiok and will be reborn to become a great king.

Parasuram Jayanti is believed to be the birthday or appearance day of Lord Parashurama. Parashuram is the fifth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. This festival is observed on Akshay Tritiya or the third day in Shukla Paksha during Vaisakh month in many parts of India. In 2011, Parashurama Jayanthi date is May 6.

Parsu is an axe-like weapon adopted by Lord Parasuram. Lord Parasuram was the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Parashuram was born in Satyu-Yuga and stayed alive till Mahabharata time (Dwapara Yuga). Some scriptures say that Lord Parashuram will stay alive until the Universe faces the Mahapralaya (deluge).

Parasuram Jayanti is celebrated with utmost fervor in Konkan area. Konkan region is called as Parashurama Bhoomi (the land of Parshurama) because Lord Parshurama is considered as the creator of the Konkan coast. In Kerala and some neighboring places celebrate Parsuram Jayanti in Kerala month of Vrishchika masam (Margasirsh month) which comes usually in December.

Significance and Purpose of Parasurama Avatar:
The main purpose of the avatar of Lord Parashurama, the sixth incarnation of Vishnu, to make the earth free from the burden of cruel kshatriya kings by defeating the evilness of them as they neglected their regular duties as kings.

The kshatriya kings of the earth became very cruel and were performing many anti-religious acts in the Satya-Yug. Goddess Prithvi (Mother Earth) was unbearable of all these ridiculous acts of the kings and went to Lord Sri Maha Vishnu and worshipped the Lord to relieve her form this. Lord Vishnu appeared in front of Mother Earth and assured that he will incarnate as Parasurama, a . Parasuram has taken revenge of his fathers brutal murder by a kshatriya king and relieved the Mother Earth by slaying all kshatriya kings of the earth.

Temples and Holy Places of Lord Parashuram:
Lord Parasurama was the incarnation of Lord Vishnu, but he is not worshipped as much as Lord Sri Rama and Lord Sri Krishna. The worship of Lord Parasurama is also very strange as we cant compare it with other worship procedures, as the Lord is the Avesha Avatara like Lord Narasimha Swamy.

In Maharahstra, there is a temple for Lord Parsurama at Lote Parshurama in Ratnagiri district. The Konkan area is called as Parashurama Bhoomi (the land of Parshurama) because Lord Parshurama is considered as the creator of the Konkan coast. There are several temples for Lord Parsuram in Gujarat (Bharuch and Songadh), Maharashtra (Akkalkot, Khopali) and in Jammu Kashmir (Akhnoor).

Rituals and Customs of Parsurama Jayanti:
Parsurama Jayanti is a very important festival for Brahmins as the Lord was also a brahmin. They worship him with utmost devotion and in regions; people observe fasting as the festival coincides with Akshay Tritiya.
